Switch Africa Green - Industrial Symbiosis
Ghana continues to suffer from unsustainable consumption of natural resources such as forests, minerals, water bodies and fisheries. Development efforts based on resource efficient and cleaner production are recognised as an essential requirement for achieving sustainable development while addressing the persistent environmental degradation.
Industrial Symbiosis is an association between two or more industrial facilities in which the waste or by-product of one become the raw material for another. Thus, allowing resources to be used productively for longer time. The advantages of the practice include the under-listed :
- Productive use of waste/by-product that would have otherwise been dumped.
- Reduction in waste disposal cost.
- Environmental concerns associated with dumping of the waste is reduced.
- Additional Revenue from sale of the waste.
- Creation of employment through businesses that will be established to process the waste/by-product.
