Familiarization Tour by EPA Executive Director and Deputies

On Thursday, the 6th of June 2024, the Executive Director Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, the Deputy Executive Director (General Services) Mr. Abu Abdul Hanan, the Deputy Executive Director (Operations) Mr. Ransford Sekyi, the Ag. Deputy Executive Director (Technical Services) Ing. Esi Nerquaye-Tetteh and the Head of Admin Tema Regional office Mrs. Elizabeth A. Otipeseku as part of their familiarization tour visited Ghana National Cleaner Production Center (GNCPC) to discuss the progress of the center and to promote it’s activities to a wider audience.

This being the first in-person visit of the Director to the center. The GNCPC presented activities of the center and project being worked on. This brought to light some major setbacks and challenges the center is facing. The Director in his remarks assured the center of his full support and to spearhead the reform of the center to a better standing to provide world class consultancy in resource efficiency and cleaner production to the national market.

Used Lead Batteries (ULAB) Auditors Training Workshop

On the 6th to 8th of February 2024, the Ghana National Cleaner Production Center jointly implemented with the Mountain Research Institute, the Institute for Material Science and Technology (EMPA) and Oeko Institut in collaboration with World Resources Forum (WRF) with funding from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) held a training workshop at the Electricity Companyof Ghana Training School in Tema community 10 for Auditors for used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) Recycling Facilities as part of implementing the Sustainable Recycling Industries Project II (SRI II), to promote sustainable e-waste recycling in Ghana. In attendance were Saeed Forocco-Head of EPA MID Department,Sally Bineh-Director for Regional Office EPA, Magdalene Wüst-Deputy Head of Cooperation and Charlotte Esenam Afudego-Private Sector Development Trade Specialist all from the Embassy of Swizerland in Ghana. 

The objective was to equip regulators to effectively implement the Technical Guidelines for Environmentally Sound Management of Used Lead Acid Batteries in Ghana.

Inaugration of SRI ERSDA Executives

The official swearing-in of ERSDA Executives and the inauguration of the Eastern Region Scrap Dealers Association (ERSDA) brought a sense of purpose and excitement at the ERSDA Regional Office located at Zongo Market, Koforidua. This was a turning point, reaffirming the association's dedication to quality and environmentally friendly methods to managing e-waste, with the continuous help of Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI), the Swiss Embassy in Ghana's project implementation agency.

E-MAGIN AWARENESS TRAINING WORKSHOP IN GREATER ACCRA AND EASTERN REGION

The Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre (GNCPC) as part of implementing the project Electronic Waste Management in Ghana (E-MAGIN), the Centre with it partners University of Cape Coast, City Waste Recycling Limited and Adelphi organized two regional awareness events  on Sustainable E-waste Dismantling, which occurred on the 13th and 14th  of November, 2019 at the New Century Training Institute, Dansoman and the St Mary’s Vocational Training Institute, Asamankese.

This was done in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the lead organization in the implementation of the project, Adelphi and City Waste Recycling Company Limited (CWRC). UCC focused on the basics of e-waste management. Adelphi focused on the need for e-waste management in Ghana. CWRC focused on the benefits of the e-waste management sector and the need for collection centers whiles the GNCPC focused on the laws and legalities supporting and encouraging e-waste management in Ghana.

The training targeted technical and vocational school students in the Greater Accra Region and the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Objectives of the Awareness Events

The main objective of the events were to provide practical knowledge on the management, disassembling and basic aim of e-magin. Specific objectives of the training include the following;

  • Introduction to Electronic Waste Management in Ghana (E-MAGIN) project concept.
  • Bringing to the knowledge of participants all environmentally sound practices in the management of e-waste.
  • Educating students on the importance of sustainable e-waste management.
  • Educating students on the rewards and perks of participating in e-waste management.
  • Educating students on economical viable businesses from e-waste.

Students were trained in both theoretical classroom sessions as well as hands-on practical dismantling sessions.The facilitators for the training included Mr. Ebenezer Kumi from Adelphi, Mr. Boohene from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, Mr. Paul Ocran from The Ghana National Cleaner Production Centre, Mr. Jurgen Meinel & Mrs. Vivian Ahiayibor both from City Waste Recycling Company and some supporting staff from all organizing parties involved. About two hundred and ten (210) students were trained on Sustainable E-waste dismantling. This number consisted of students from the New Century Training Institute, Dansoman and the St Mary’s Vocational Training Institute, Asamankese.
